SkySuite vs Raptor Maps for solar O&M work — when each one is the right tool

Pilots considering both Raptor Maps and SkySuite for solar O&M work are usually weighing them in good faith. Raptor is the best-known platform in the category; their ML defect detection on solar arrays is strong; their O&M customer roster includes a lot of names. SkySuite is the newer, smaller name, built around a different theory of who the customer is.

This post is meant to be honest about which platform wins in which scenario, so you can make a decision that fits your business — not a buying decision driven by who has the bigger ad budget. Pricing numbers below are reconstructed from public references and pilot conversations; treat them as ballpark, not contract.

Raptor Maps is the right call when…

  • You’re an O&M company flying your own owned-or-managed solar fleet. Raptor’s pricing model — typically per-MW under management — fits the use case where the SaaS subscription comes out of the asset-management budget, not the inspection vendor’s pocket.
  • You need their specific ML defect catalog out of the box. The Raptor anomaly classifier is mature for solar-specific defects (cell-level hot spots, string failures, soiling patterns, diode issues). For a buyer who already knows they want that taxonomy, Raptor delivers it on day one.
  • The O&M company has standardized on Raptor across their portfolio. Network effects matter. If your customer has trained their thermography contractors and dispatch team on Raptor’s UI, the switching cost makes Raptor the obvious continuation.
  • You’re not the customer-of-record. You’re flying as a subcontractor; the SaaS bill goes to the operator, not you.

SkySuite is the right call when…

  • You’re the pilot, and the solar O&M company is YOUR customer. You bill them; they don’t bill you. SkySuite’s subscription is yours, not theirs. You own the deliverable portal, the brand on the report, and the long-term relationship with their facilities team.
  • You fly more than solar. If your portfolio is solar + utility poles + roofs + construction + telecom, paying per-vertical SaaS for each one is unaffordable. SkySuite is one subscription across all of those workflows.
  • You want to keep the source data. GeoTIFFs, KMZ flight paths, radiometric mosaics — they’re stored in your storage, accessible by API, exportable on demand. No vendor lock on the data layer.
  • You’re price-sensitive on the inspection itself. A platform priced per-MW-under-management drives different math than one priced per-pilot-seat.

The actual cost comparison, run honestly

Take a working solo pilot doing 80 solar inspections a year across 12 O&M customers, averaging 8 MW per inspection. That’s 640 MW of inspection volume annually.

Raptor Maps path. The O&M operator (your customer) pays Raptor per-MW under management. Their budget. You’re not on the SaaS hook, but you also don’t own the platform — you’re billing flight time against their workflow. Typical pilot economics:

  • Per-inspection invoice: $1,800-3,200 depending on site complexity
  • Platform cost to you: $0
  • Platform stickiness to your customer: high (they own the SaaS)
  • Your defensible margin: pure pilot labor + drone amortization

SkySuite path. You pay one subscription (Pro tier — currently $49/mo — includes mission planning, cloud GPU processing, delivery portal, and the solar templates; Free tier covers the basics if you’re starting out). Your customer doesn’t see the SaaS bill.

  • Annual platform cost: ~$588 (Pro)
  • Per-inspection cost-of-goods (GPU + storage): roughly $30-90
  • Per-inspection invoice to customer: same $1,800-3,200, plus typically a $400-600 deliverable-package premium because the SkySuite-branded report is whitelabeled to you
  • Annual revenue uplift from owning the relationship: ~$32,000-48,000 on this volume (80 inspections × ~$500 incremental)
  • Net platform value: tens of thousands of dollars per year over the Raptor path, on the same volume — and the platform pays for itself inside the first month, not the first quarter.

The hidden line nobody calculates honestly. When the O&M company has the SaaS, the pilot is replaceable at any renewal. When you own the SaaS and the deliverable, you are the relationship. Five-year customer lifetime value at $25K/year average is $125K; replaceable- pilot churn turns that into one-and-done $25K.

What Raptor does better

Be honest with your customer. The Raptor ML defect catalog has been trained on hundreds of millions of solar panel images. SkySuite’s thermal anomaly detection is solid, but it’s not five years of proprietary training data. If your customer’s diligence call asks “show me the F1 score on residential string failures at 60m AGL”, Raptor has a number, and it’s better than ours today.

Counter-argument: 95% of what an O&M coordinator acts on is the hot- spot detection + geolocation, not the deep defect taxonomy. SkySuite ships that 95% and lets you bring a thermography contractor for the remaining 5%. That’s the right trade for a working pilot’s deal flow.

What SkySuite does better

Three concrete things:

  1. One subscription across verticals. Solar + utility + roofing + telecom + construction + government all on the same platform, one user account, one delivery portal. Raptor is solar-vertical.
  2. The deliverable portal is yours. Customer logs into a URL you brand, not Raptor’s portal. The relationship is built on your URL, not theirs.
  3. The source data is yours. Your storage, your API access, your export. If you ever leave SkySuite, you take the data.

How to decide

  • If your business model is flying as a subcontractor to an O&M operator that already runs Raptor: stay on Raptor’s workflow, don’t fight the customer.
  • If your business model is owning the relationship with the O&M customer and selling them inspections directly: SkySuite is the right platform. The economics compound across years.
  • If your business model is flying multiple verticals — solar, utility, roofing, telecom — across a portfolio of customers: SkySuite. Raptor doesn’t serve the non-solar verticals.

Whichever you pick, don’t pick because the platform’s website was prettier than the other one.
